Well, I've seen the movie and haven't seen the play. I thought the movie was pretty good. The "Catcher" part in the movie comes from Will Smith's character -- he's a poor, young black man posing as a Harvard graduate describing a thesis he heard about Catcher. If I remember right, the thesis tried to explain what Chapman (I think) possible got out of Catcher by way of incentive to kill John Lennon. It's interesting, etc, etc, like any good thesis.
