There is tokenism in the univsersities, yes, but at the same time no
matter who you are or how you got in, you still have to do the work.  At
the college I attended we had token foreign nationals in our MLS program
-- one guy's writing, in particular, was pathetic.  Barely High School
level, really not quite that.  An American student on his level wouldn't
have been accepted into the program -- he would have been sent to a
remedial program at a local community college.  I know this because I
worked with the guy in my college's Writing Center and he was a near
hopeless case.  I still tried.

But even though he got in, he was on his way out the door.  You still
have to keep up.
