I think it definetely depends on the personality, specifically, the
manner and degree to which the intelligence is used. Arrogant intelligent
people use their intelligence as an excuse for their arrogance which,
generally, only hurts themselves by causing alienation. Unless, you're really
critically intelligent in which case you might question the whole purpose of
the thing, and since nobody else understands what you're thinking you feel
alienated.
As for myself, I have a bunch of friends with generally the same high
level of intelligence, and varying degrees of criticalness, but we go to the
same school and have the same friends, so I suppose that keeps us together.

most people i've encountered resent me or simply alienate me if i'm more
intelligent (none of these are my friends, of course)
