"why, incidentally, 'The Badger State'?"
Early settlers of the great state of Wisconsin spent winters burrowing in self-dug holes in the ground before shelters of any substance could be built. Hence, the nickname "badgers".
Not as interesting as some secret badger plot to do away with cows.
U-rah-rah.
