Ah, there's probably SOMETHING to that, Scottie, but one thing I discovered running online reading groups for AOL is that the group kinda takes on a life of its own. After awhile we started caring more about just hanging out and shooting the breeze with each other than we did about talking about the book...which we did eventually force ourselves to do after about a half hour into our one hour chats. So this is normal to me. I do think part of it is that JD's widely published works are pretty slim, too, and most of us don't have easy access to the underpublished fiction, so we can easily run out of things to say about him. If I were to sit down and reread, say, Franny and Zooey right now, I could come up with something new. But I've read it a few times over and don't feel like that right now. I think the newer members of the list need to step up with their ideas :) Jim Rovira Check out "Up Against the Wall" for links to numerous literature and writing resources on the internet. http://members.aol.com/antiutopia/main.htm On Wed, 28 Jul 1999 07:54:38 +0100 Scottie Bowman <rbowman@indigo.ie> writes: > > When you consider the absolute avalanche of rubbish > over the past week or two - from my own senile flatulence > on the one hand to the generalised infantile hyperemesis > on the other - isn't it rather obvious that, on this list, > enthusiasm can be generated for almost any topic under > the sun EXCEPT the writing of JD Salinger? > > It's like belonging to a church where the clap-happy > Christians will play you their guitars & tambourines, > campaign for gay rights, sell you holidays to the Dead Sea, > enlist Christers for Clinton - do virtually anything to avoid > a consideration of the words & life of Jesus of Nazareth. > > Maybe the time has come to admit honestly that, > for most of us here, he's really an extinct volcano whose > modest oeuvre has now been wrung dry of all further > possible comment. > > Scottie B. > > > ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
