Hi Hilary. I think for a paper on characterization, especially one that isn't more than about 5-10 pages long, you maybe want to consider one of the 9 stories. It just may make it easier on you to have everything kind of contained. I would suggest "For Esme," because 1) it's the best one, 2) it's representative of Salinger at the height of his powers, and 3) it's fookin' brilliant! I think it would also be pretty easy to compare/contrast Holden with Staff Sergeant X. You could talk about X's relationship with Esme as compared to Holden's with Phoebe, the ease with which they communicate with youngsters and the salvation these young girls represent to the respective protagonists.
