It seems we have a semantic panic. I didn't say that The Clash were the lodestone, just a more legitimate and talented band (and where would they be without reggae?). Compare Green Day to Rancid, who make no bones about their debt to The Clash, and I think you'll see what I mean (ie. Rancid is good, Green Day is bad, but it's just an opinion, no offense intended). Despite the nasty tone of my original post, I appreciate the info on Salinger and it does seem to belong on the list (in my humble, retarded, ridiculous opinion). The Offspring make reference to "bananafish" somewhere too, unfortunately. I'm never sure how to take these Salinger references. I think when it comes from someone who I otherwise like I accept it. I guess when I get annoyed it's because Salinger feels like such a personal possession of mine that I can't stand someone else grabbing hold of it casually. I'm weighed down by it & impassioned, and when it just rolls off somebody's tongue easily I want to give them that weight so they see how important it is. I am also of two minds about Salinger's privacy. I wouldn't want to talk about it in public, if someone were to interview me (AS IF!), because I respect his wish to remain isolated (which kind of makes my presence on the list hypocritical), but the work is so important that I would think it needed to be discussed. I don't know. Anyway, I wasn't trying to discount your opinion. rick
