Paul... I share your praise of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Chekov (I've never been able to make it through a Turgenev book in the past), and I have been a bit critical of Lolita the book myself, but after forcing my way through the whole thing and actually making it to the end it really nailed me. The end made the book for me. I'm reserving judgment on the Lolita rip-off. Similar ripoffs have been done before with some success (I've heard good things about John Gardner's Grendel, and a stage version of such a rip off would be Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which was wonderful). Anyway, I'm willing to pick the thing up and see if the first 20 pages or so draw me in. But that's only because the original seemed to have some merit with me.
